Update

We knew there was lots happening online in Sussex ... but even so interest in our May 20 - this Wednesday - event took us but surprise. We have expanded the programme (see below for the original invite) so it now includes:

  • Updates on plans for Brighton and Hove's Digital City and library service
  • News from West Sussex including their public access kiosk project, and from Wired Sussex
  • Video conferencing demonstration
  • A young person's view of the Net.... what's really interesting and useful
  • Ideas for a Digital Village project
  • A challenge from our near neighbours in Croydon
  • How GIS - Geographical Information Systems - can help (and what they are)

Plus a buffet provided by the British Computer Society AGM, with a keynote address 'Computers and Communities' from BCS president Sir Brian Jenkins CBE.

Subject: Free event - an invitation to help create Sussex Online

  • How can we use the Internet to help create a better Sussex?
  • How do we ensure new technology is designed to meet local needs?

I hope you will be able to attend an important event at Brighton University on the afternoon of Wednesday May 20. Please forward to others who may be interested - apologies for cross-posting.

A unique mix of computer professionals, community and rural development specialists are combining to promote a vision of how the Internet and other new media can benefit local groups and communities in Sussex. We will be joined by the President of the British Computer Society.

The event is being organised by a partnership of the Sussex Branch of the British Computer Society to coincide with their 30th anniversary, together with Sussex Rural Community Council, Sussex Community Internet Project, Brighton University and Partnerships Online. May 20th will see the start of the Sussex Online initiative - the partners aim to support its development on a continuing basis. It isn't an exclusive group, however - anyone who shares the vision can join in.

The vision

  • A learning network for anyone in Sussex interested in how to use the Internet for community benefit - information, communication, collaboration.
  • The tools to provide individuals and organisations with appropriate facilities - including a Sussex Community Server.
  • Partnerships to bid for funds to develop the network, systems, training and support.
